Small Projects

This is the before picture of an iron clock we found at a thrift store for $2. There was a huge tag on the back that said "Does NOT work". Even upon purchasing it, we were warned again that it didn't work, lol. I added a little black glaze, and 2 clock kits later (the first one didn't work *sigh*) It is now a finished project. Well almost........the hands don't stand out so well and I haven't decided on a color for them.

And better late than never, right? There was not an address marker on the house when we bought it. It's not really TOO important since our mail goes to a PO Box and people around here don't use the numbers either. "Where do you live?" "Big Yellow House" "Oh yeah" or "How do I find your house?" " "Look for the big yellow house". But I wanted something for the occasional times that UPS drops off a package here instead of at the post office. I decided to get seasonal with it and finally finished my fall marker yesterday.

The hubby is off work for a broken foot, so we've been getting out of the house here and there (you can only work so much, right?) and visiting thrift stores and such. We found a fabulous egg basket the other day for only $1 and I knew right where it would go.

I love the way it looks up there and better than the bare bulb! I recently changed out the curtain in the window too. I love the light that comes in now, but something is off. I think it's the curtain rod, I'll be looking for something better later.

I talked about painting a chalkboard on the pantry doors in the kitchen HERE. I finally got that done, found some chalk, but can't find an eraser, hmmm.

I had seen some outdoor hanging jar lights somewhere........and since I have an abundance of them, I thought I would try it too.

There have been a couple of larger things done I'll get around to talking about someday. But the list of unfinished projects seems to be larger than ever! I so need a system before my house fills up with family for Thanksgiving!

UPDATE:

We went to another thrift store yesterday (surprise, surprise) And I found 2 more egg baskets for 75 cents each! I bought them both. I decided I liked the kitchen light so much, I added one in the laundry AFTER it got a nice coat of red on it that is. The other one is hanging on a hook, waiting for duty or repurposing somewhere.

Oh, I also got that curtain rod for the kitchen I wanted for $1!! I so love a bargain and people who give away perfectly good items!

The New Old Loveseat

I mentioned it over HERE when I found that fabulous vanity/dressing table/dresser for next to nothing. And I finally got around to taking pictures of it and cleaning it. If you remember, the price on this beauty was FREE. This was after we finally brought it inside. See the yuckiness on the cushions?

Isn't it beautiful though? I've tried to date it but there are no tags or distinguishable markings on it at all. This is after I poured hydrogen peroxide on it to kill whatever that might be on the cushions.

And this was after the cleaning, most of it came out, BUT, it still needs recovered and as you can see it does NOT match my room at all!

The thing is.........I've never reupholstered anything before and I'm so afraid of messing it up! I found someone's blog that had a step by step (I'll have to "find" it again) (aha, found it HERE)and it didn't look TOO horribly hard, but I'm still afraid. I've already picked the fabric (red and it's gorgeous) so that's not the problem. Maybe it's because I don't sew? I suppose it doesn't need much for sewing and  I MIGHT have someone that just might maybe help out with the sewing of the cushion covers. The (ugly) chair in the living room needs a lot of sewing done for it though and I just can't bring myself to pay someone $564 (that's the estimate) to do it for me. The chair and ottoman is super comfy though. It's affectionately (or not) known as the poker chair.

And it doesn't match a thing.

The Bathroom

The main bathroom in our home is of course added on after the fact. Older homes traditionally had bathrooms added on in the back of the house. Ours is on the other side of the kitchen (behind the hutch) and currently the only entryway is through a bedroom. I suppose maybe it was meant to be a master bedroom at one point, but it's so SMALL. (That's why I confiscated the parlor for the master) The bathroom is an OK size, but there is room to make it larger, and maybe we will one day, who knows?

You can see the clapboard under the sheetrock in the bathroom where we had to move the one outlet to put the new mirror in.

He hates electrical (lol) but he got it done like a champ :)

This is the medicine cabinet that was originally in the bathroom. It will be relocated to the upstairs bathroom which has NO mirror and NO storage whatsoever. And this is the sink/vanity that was in the bathroom. It was the ONLY storage in the bathroom at all. Where did previous owners put anything? This little beauty will be relocated to the mancave.

We found this larger beauty with LOTS of storage at ReStore for only $35! And the sink/countertop was only $5. Can you beat a deal like that?

This is what that cabinet looks like today with just a little paint. Isn't it beautiful? I knew immediately when I saw the cabinet in the bathroom I wanted a black and white bathroom and I think it turned out great.

Found this at a thrift store for $2, and with a little more paint and a piece of material.

I now have this. And the material on this, of course led to covering these

Which put me on the search for the perfect rug, which I eventually found at Target.

And by adding a black shower curtain liner behind the shower curtain, I think it matches up great!

Now I just needed some pictures to hang on the walls. I found some fabulous frames at a thrift store for $2 each, painted them, and ended up with these. There are 4 that all say bath in a different language.

Add in my $5 thrift store frame

And a mirror to fit it from ReStore, and I have a centerpiece for my new vanity.

I now needed a new floor that didn't blend in with the rug, and went with the same flooring that we put in the kitchen so I wouldn't have to worry about water. It's called Allure from Home Depot, and it's fabulous!

Painted the baseboard black, added in some 10cent jars I found to hold things in and a few decorations

Yes, even fall decorations. And I'm almost done! We now just need a new light fixture to replace the ugly bar lights we have now. I'm just having a hard time deciding on something. *sigh*

OH! I almost forgot to mention the new towel holders I made. I (he) just don't have them hung yet.

Look what I found!

Last Friday, we went out shopping at our favorite thrift store and stumbled upon this gem! Isn't she beautiful? And I even got it for the low down super price of $34.96! It was so strange to find this when I had just looked at one like this on craigslist that was selling for $150.00. The stamp on the bottom is kinda hard to read but it was made by Barnard and Cope Furniture. The only thing I could find on them so far is that they were established in 1871. So many possibilities with this, but I was told (ordered) by my Mom not to touch it (ie: paint) until we could date it and appraise it.

We got a bunch of other goodies there too, as always.

I've been searching for a mirror like that for a while now for my water closet at a decent price, and this one was more than decent, only $2.98!

As we were leaving, I saw someone donating a love seat that I wanted super bad, and if the manager wasn't out there, I would have asked for it. It looks something like this, but smaller.

It's even greenish in color like that (although that will have to change). We went back to that thrift store on Monday and it was nowhere in sight *sigh*. But as fate would have it, we walked outside and around back to hit up the dollar tree while we were there, and there it was! It had a stain on the cushion so they were throwing it away *gasp*. So I ended up getting it for FREE (my favorite price) It's now home with me :)
